Welcome
Frank "Rusty" Bullard is an author/writer of historical fiction books.
My latest book Hunting with Mark is the true story of the Berolzheimer hunting expedition from New York to Little Saint Simons Island, GA. The character-driven narrative historical-fiction begins on the 7th of December 1921 and follows the expedition’s log book. The fictitious narrator, Frank Leverett, is a young Auburn Engineer from central Georgia and a veteran of the Great War. He befriends Philip Berolzheimer, president of the Eagle Pencil Co., NYC Park Commissioner, and Tammany Sachem, who invites Leverett to join him and seven other Tammany elites, to his secluded private island as their guide. Mark is an African American who becomes Leverett’s best friend in this cultural island adventure. Traveling from NYC by steamship, they make stops at Charleston, Jacksonville, Fernandina, and Saint Simons Island, where the events of 1921 are described in detail and forgotten local history, is sited at each port. The expedition begins in NYC, where Leverett is working as the construction surveyor buildingThe Holland Tunnel. After attending a Tammany Christmas party and a night out with Coco Chanel, he must race to board the ship as he’s haunted by the memories of serving with the Expeditionary Forces in France as a member of the Alabama 167th Rainbow Division. The battles of Château-Thierry, Saint-Mihiel, and Cote De Chatillon, are told from the viewpointof being there. The historic account of Auburn’s Band, led by Its 1917 bandleader and football coach Paul R. Bidez is also told in serving overseas as the military band for AEF’s Big Red 1. The Battle of Sullivan’s Island in Charleston, the burning of Jacksonville, the Pirates of Fernandina, and the destruction of Fort Caroline are also woven into this tale. Accurate accounts are difficult to research, and every nuance of this story is correct.
